All forums need a way to vote, do we want just plain numbers voting, or do we need a choice style vote (i.e. STV)? Or does it all depend on what we're deciding?

What kind of voting? Is it voting for the thread it self and how good it is?

Then probably look at what Face Punch Studios forum used to have.

They have them for different reasons... You vote for that reply.

Example: Agree, Disagree, ZING, Funny, Thanks, Winner, Gold Star and so on.

I really like this kind of rating, people are more into actually voting.

This system your making is turning out really nice, you should probably think about making a downloadable web application for people to use for there WOW clan clients.

That is the eventual idea; to make an open sourcey kinda all encompassing premade guild website for anyone who wants it (correct me if I'm wrong). But before that happens and it gets ''released'' there needs to be an awful lot of time and effort going into making it admin friendly so you didn't /have/ to be a coder to be able to assign or change X and or Y - and obviously at the moment the main focus is on getting features in first. That's what the Syndicate Project is :D

And by the voting mechanism I think Pete was talking about something along the lines of

Shall we do a heroic tonight? (5 people voted yes, 4 people voted no)

        or something just for fun

What is your favourite instance in Outland?

        x% said Botanica
        x% said Shadow Labs

        etc

Isn't that a Poll system that you are talking about?

I think for all intents and purposes that's a very minor distinction, Google define for example:

poll: an inquiry into public opinion conducted by interviewing a random sample of people
        vote: a choice that is made by counting the number of people in favor of each alternative;

Andy is correct in my initial intention, although I suspect this may have been due to us having discussed it off hand once or twice. The question was really aimed at what type of voting system is used, cumulative voting, single transferable vote, plurality voting or otherwise. Additionally should ballots be able to be secret, etc.

What you describe Aran is what I'd describe as giving karma to posts or users, and thus elevating the post higher or easier to see.

We all have different terms, I would suggest a poll indicates that the end result isn't directly used, where as a vote is a result that people will carry out. But again, this is arguing language rather then content.

I would suggest that a forum post "hyping"/"karmaing"/"voting" system become a seperate thread if it's something people want to see.

I'm not entirely sure that for a closed forum like this you really need to bother giving people "karma" points. For example, I already know that Andy is a mentalist, without needing people to have voted up or down his posts :-)

Seems a bit much. If we had a community of hundreds of thousands of users where the good stuff needed to be sifted from the shite then fine, thats how wowhead.com works after all... most of the time.

As we are I'd rather not post things and find someone was down-voting me. I might start a witch hunt to find out who it was :-D
