Right, I thought I should write this up. Mike and I were in WibWobs talking one afternoon and we kinda decided how we were going to make tagging gallery images "easy". It's a very geeky way, but it shouldn't be a huge stretch for non-techs.
Basically on photographs you would use the description box to enter key words that people would want to find pictures based upon. For those of you who use or know twitter it won't look to dissimilar.
So in a text box if you wanted to refer to a user or character you would do:
@Terlan
@Peter
In the case of character name, some magic would happen to prevent future confusion if another character of the same name appeared. It would automatically be converted to:
@Terlan{Bloodhoof,EU}
On the actual comment page you'd be presented with a link to the tag page for Terlan, or perhaps the character view. Same with user names.
We're also going to permit referencing to events, although we haven't got the format of that sorted yet. And finally you'll be able to create any tag:
{Awesome UI}
{L33t Skillz}
Etc, additionally allowing multiple key words in the same block for just simple tagging.. {Tag1,Tag2,Tag3}
We then also thought that we could use this in forum posts. The @User or @Character could cause it to be brought to the attention of the user who owned the account/character. You could also tag posts with generic tags so that searching for things could be easier.
It's not completely thought out, and I've left my basic notes on my desk at work. So this is all from memory.
